How to Know Your Angles? What Angles Work for You?

From my years of modeling, I would say that angles are one of THE trickiest parts of being a model. Knowing your best or most suitable angles really makes or breaks how a photo comes out! With good practice, your angle will easily come to you each and every time!

1. Recognize your Features

So! How can you detect your own angles?? For starters everyone has a favorite pose that they may use in almost all their photos. Start there and maybe tilt your head to the left or move your eye in a different direction even and see what new angles you can create!

For example: I have a naturally defined contour, longer jawline and a pointed chin. I like to describe my face as an “anime character” haha! Meaning my head is rounded then my jaw is squared and then meets my chin kind of like and upside down trianlge. Longer jawline also means that I want to show my profile more as it is a very defined part of my bone structure!

I’ll show you:

I would like to highlight those features of my face a lot more since they are just more defined. Therefore, I chose those same angles in most of my photoshoots!

2. Play Around with what YOU Got!

What do I mean by play around?? Finding your angles are also supposed to be both fun and challenging! Don’t feel as though you have to be strict or serious with finding that special side. You want to feel natural, yet your most authentic self too. This could be smiling, jumping around to see how many angles you can capture or even funny faces that could still be worth a professional photo

JUST REMEMBER TO…

A. Don’t lose your face! (keep shoulders down and not raising your chin up too much)

B.  Keep to the Concept. In other words, if the shoot is meant to be more serious and just focusing on a more “fierce” look then make sure you match that energy with your angles as well

C. See Like a Photographer. A photographer is the one person that can really see how you look on camera, which is why it’s important to follow their direction. Even the biggest models are still following their direction because it’s not possible to actually see how you look, only feel. Imagine you’re the photographer and you can almost see how the photo may portray if you angle yourself a certain way.

D. Smize!!! Don’t forget to smile with your eyes. The eyes are one of the easiest areas of your face that can be forgotten to highlight because you’re so worried about how your angles may come out. You can have a great photo but then your eyes just lose the story. Know what eye shapes coexist with your angles!

3. Versatility

Oh do I loveee versatility! Showing off different sides of you both literally and figuratively are always great factors of being a model. In the light of finding your best angles, feel free to change it up each time

Down below is a fun video I did for the Director Lacey Studio that I had the opportunity of doing, that shows a BUNCH of different angles and expression:

Versatility, whether it’s a different makeup look to match the concept, hair, etc; are always fun factors in the highlight of showing your best angles! Just remember to keep to a clean look and feel your head to your toe every time when finding your best angles. Continue to discover what fits best towards your overall features!
